What can I do to get involved?
- Speak up! Participate in municipal, provincial and federal public consultations and share your thoughts with political representatives.
- Step up! Take what you have seen to heart making small personal choices that reflect your new or renewed awareness.
- Read up! Learn more about the issues raised at the film fest by reading local and current articles.
Things that you can do to promote peace:
1 Write, phone or e-mail your MLA, MP, the Prime Minister
2 Sign an on-line petition from a legitimate organization ( see the related links)
3 Write a letter to the editor, answer on-line polls or express your views through calling talk back lines or sending e-mails to information programs such as The Current or Cross Country Check-up. Letters can be sent to:
- The Chronicle Herald at letters@herald.ca,
- The Progress Enterprise or Bridgewater Bulletin at editorial@lighthouse.ns.ca ,
- The Chester Clipper at shelli@chesterclipper.ca
4 Send your charitable donations to those organizations or groups who are promoting peace and social justice
5 Participate in live call-in shows when they are focusing on these issues
6 Read alternate sources of information such as journals or on-line news websites to be kept informed (for example, rabble.ca, truthout.org), also watch documentaries that address these issues (see list)
7 Talk to your friends about issues that concern you, organize a study circle in your home
8 Encourage, support, mentor the young people in your life
9 Read books from your local library on war and peace or donate a book/video to the library that you have found informative for other people to see
10 Consider joining the vigil in front of MP Gerald Keddy’s office every Monday from 4:00 to 5:00 p.m. There are 12-15 dedicated people who participate in the vigil
11 Promote peace through the wearing of buttons or putting bumper stickers on your car. These will be available for purchase at the film festival or through contacting the South Shore Chapter of the Council of Canadians
12 Take part in actions and events sponsored by the Halifax Peace Coalition
13 Work for a Department of Peace within the Government of Canada, brochures will be available at the film festival
14 Support other organizations or groups who are working within our communities to end violence; in particular, violence against women and girls
15 Imagine, visualize, pray, dream….PEACE
